Hyundai’s rear wheel drive sports coupe was unveiled in 2008 and carved out its rightful place in the sports car category. Despite the Genesis brand being an independent luxury division of the auto giant, for some reason they’ve deemed it necessary to include Hyundai in the name of this luxury sports car. US retail prices start at $26,950.

Hyundai is offering the 2017 Genesis Coupe in three variants, namely the 3.8, 3.8 R and 3.8 U. Each of these has two doors, four seats and a 3.8 litre GDI, DOHC, V6 engine pumping out an awesome 348 hp. The standard transmission is a 6-speed close ratio manual gearbox. An 8-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic and rev-matching is available as an option.

The driver faces a set of electroluminescent gauges, and sits in a bolstered sport seat. The cockpit is designed to tune out distractions. A standard 6-inch color display interfaces with the car’s multi functional audio system.

2)Nissan 370Z

For 2017 Nissan has decided to offer the new 370Z in as many as six variants with only minor differences under the hood. The base version comes with a 3.7 litre DOHC, 24-valve, V6 aluminum alloy engine that can produce 332 hp of peak power. The engine now features Variable Valve Event and Lift (VVEL) for faster response and a broader torque range with the redline going all the way up to 7,500 rpm. The technology also improves fuel economy, with Nissan claiming 19 mpg for the 370Z in city driving conditions.

The car’s 7-speed automatic transmission has been designed with a wide spread of gearing to allow for efficiency and silent cruising at high speeds. The 370Z gets a double wishbone suspension in front and multilink in the rear. Sport tuned shock absorbers do credit to the vehicle’s sports car performance. US retail prices begin at $29,990.

3)Subaru BRZ

Developed in collaboration with Toyota, this fastback sports coupe has been manufactured by Subaru since 2012.  The 2017 BRZ packs a naturally aspirated 2.0 litre, horizontally opposed, Subaru Boxer engine. This power pack is tuned to put out as much as 205 hp. The engine’s Dual Active Valve Control System optimizes power without the need for a turbo. The flat engine design makes for a low center of mass and better handling.

In keeping with Subaru tradition the car has been designed to be extremely responsive. The 6-speed fully synchronized close ratio manual transmission is a step in the right direction. Also available is a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The car’s low curb weight and optimal weight distribution further improve handling.

The BRZ’s infotainment system enables apps for news, navigation, weather, music and other multimedia content. Subaru claims a city fuel economy of 24 mpg for the car. US retail prices start from $25,495.

4)Dodge Challenger

This classic American muscle car packs a hefty punch. The 2017 Dodge Challenger GT all wheel drive now has a 3.6 litre Pentastar V6 engine producing 305 hp of peak power. For those who want more, there are bigger engine variants including the 5.7 litre HEMI V8, the 6.4 litre HEMI V8, and a supercharged 6.2 litre HEMI SRT Hellcat V8 engines. An 8-speed automatic transmission with electronic shifter is now available. Six-speed manual still comes as standard with the larger engine blocks.

Dodge has completely revamped the Challenger’s interior, adding cutting edge technology and all the features befitting a 2017 muscle car. A sizable 7-inch customizable driver information digital cluster display, another 8.4-inch touchscreen with navigation and 3-D graphics, and a multifunction steering wheel collectively put the control in the driver’s hands. Buyers get as many as 16 interior configurations to choose from. The new challenger also has spacious seating for five and a trunk with cargo space to match.

5)Toyota 86

This is the rebranded version of the jointly developed Subaru BRZ. The name comes from the car’s designation code during its design and development stage. As a front-engined, rear wheel driven sports coupe with great drifting capabilities, the 86 is renowned for its handling.

The car is powered by a 2.0 litre, 4-cylinder, horizontally opposed engine with DOHC 16-valve cylinder heads and dual variable valve timing. With Toyota’s D-4S direct and sequential port injection this engine produces 205 hp. A short throw 6-speed close ratio manual transmission is standard. The alternative is a 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission featuring sequential shift mode with dynamic rev management and paddle shifters. The auto also features a mode selector with sport and snow modes.

The car’s lightweight reinforced unibody and flat engine give it a low center of gravity. Sport tuned independent front and double wishbone rear suspensions further augments the car’s handling. Retail prices in the US start from $26,255.

6) Lotus Evora 400

The Evora 400 was first unveiled in 2008. The name is in keeping with a Lotus tradition of picking words starting with the letter ‘e’. The number comes from the car’s max power output, which is 400 hp at 7000 rpm.

The Evora 400 can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 186 mph with manual transmission. These stats make it the fastest production Lotus built for the road. A 3.5 litre supercharged V6 engine couples with the optional automatic six-speed gearbox which can be set to ‘race’ mode with the Dynamic Performance Management system.

The car has been built upon one of the lightest and strongest Lotus chassis, evolved from racecar technology. The mid-engine design gives the Evora excellent handling properties. In terms of optional extras Lotus offers a titanium sports exhaust and electric adjustable seats. Buyers can also opt to have the car’s air conditioning removed at no cost, to reduce weight.

The 124 Spider is an Italian sports car that retails in the US starting at $24,995. Some of the design and styling elements of this car are derived from Fiat’s iconic 124 Sport Spider, which was first unveiled in 1966.

Fiat claims that the 1.4 litre MultiAir turbo engine on the 2017 model 124 Spider puts out the most power in the car’s class. 160 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission with a short throw shifter. An optional six-speed automatic transmission is designed to maximize fuel efficiency.

A Bilstein performance suspension with stiff springs reduces body roll. The car’s weight distribution is close to a perfect 50/50, adding to the handling confidence. The 124’s interior features heated leatherette and microfiber sport seats. The leather wrapped steering wheel has integrated recessed controls for audio and other functions, to expedite selections and minimize interference with steering actions.

 8)Ford Mustang

The 2017 Mustang GT Premium Fastback is part of a long succession of iconic American muscle cars. It packs a potent 5.0 litre Ti-VCT V8 engine, which partners with a six-speed manual transmission featuring launch control, to send 435 hp @ 6500 rpm to the rear wheels. An optional 6-Speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters makes things even better.

Electronic stability control with driver selectable modes lets owners get the most of performance and efficiency from their Mustangs. 18-inch foundry black painted machined aluminum wheels are just one of the optional wheel choices for the car.

On the inside the Mustang has heated and cooled, leather trimmed front seats with 6-way power adjustable driver’s seat featuring lumbar control. Dual zone electronic auto temperature control and an audio system with 9 speakers add to the car’s comforts. Other desirable extras include adaptive cruise control and a remote start system. US price tags begin at $37,195.

The standard engine on the 2017 Chevy Camaro is a 2.0 litre turbo i4 with variable valve timing, producing 275 hp. However, when this is not enough, Chevy can fit the Camaro with a 6.2 litre V8 with a max output of 455 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque. Similarly, when it comes to transmission, a six-speed manual is standard, while Chevy offers an optional 8-speed automatic with paddle shifters.

On top of all this, the Camaro is available with a ‘track package’, which offers stiffer suspension, more aggressive tires, enhanced braking and cooling, and improved sports car performance all round. The car’s dual mode exhaust system has quad outlets with electric valves that enhance efficiency and make all the right sounds.

Technology and efficiency has also pervaded the new Camaro on the inside. Premium materials and excellent craftsmanship are evident in the car’s dash, console and trims. Chevy allows buyers to customize their Camaros with a seemingly endless selection of stripes, colors, interiors and accessories.

Mazda MX-5 Miata

The Miata has been a popular lightweight sports car since it’s unveiling in 1989. The first Miata was built according to a design selected after multiple rounds of competition. Having taken some of its original design cues from European sports cars of the 60’s, the Miata has evolved considerably over four generations.

The newest Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport packs a front mid-mounted Skyactiv 2.0 litre DOHC 16-valve, 4-cylinder engine with VVT. It produces 155 hp @ 6000 rpm and 148 lb-ft of max torque @ 4600 rpm. Electronically controlled fuel injection and an impressive compression ratio in this efficient gasoline engine give the car a city fuel efficiency of 27 mpg, with manual transmission powering the rear wheels. Mazda also offers a 6-speed sport automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

The car’s chassis is a unibody monocoque construction with high rigidity and strength. Near perfect weight distribution and the use of lightweight components gives this sports car its world-class handling.
